Taking advantage of the scoring system, the Crimson women's cross country team parlayed a lackluster performance into a split of dual meets Saturday against two powerful opponents.
The Crimson knocked off Brown, 28-29, but lost to New Hampshire, 25-35.
Harvard would have lost to both under tri-meet scoring. However, under the dual meet system, which totals the finishes of the top five runners, the Crimson snuck past Brown because of a poor result registered by the Bruins' number five runner.
Coppers
The harriers copped first and third place in the race. Darlene Beckford edged Annie Sullivan, a former Crimson stalwart who transferred to Brown.
Joanna Forman grabbed third for the Crimson but the results dropped off drastically from there. The next Crimson harrier to cross the Franklin Park finish line was Kristin Linsley, in 13th place.
Profundity
New Hampshire's depth sunk the Crimson. The Wildcat's highest finisher placed fifth, but seven Wildcat runners finished in the top fourteen.
Although only the top five count for scoring, the others bumped Crimson runners.
Crimson harrier Leslie Voight, although the sixth Harvard runner to come home, cemented the victory over Brown with her 19th-place finish. She blistered past the Bruin's fifth runner to provide the narrow margin of victory.
