Quarterbacks Need Not Apply to Yale

You can bet Crimson coach Joe Restic wishes he had Yale coach Carm Cozza's problems. Cozza used four quarterbacks Saturday en route to a 27-0 Bulldog whitewashing of Colgate.

Two Eli quarterbacks, Dennis Dunn and John Rogan, registered touchdowns, and a staunch Yale defense snatched four interceptions before halftime. Senior safety Chip Kelley snagged three errant passes, and junior Dave Novosel returned one 39 yards to the Colgate three-yard stripe. Rogan lugged it over two plays later for the Bulldogs' first touchdown.

Two other Yalie signal callers, Phil Manley and Steve Betz, engineered the offense effectively. Cozza's squad now possesses an unblemished 3-0 record and shares top spot in the Ivy League with the Crimson and Cornell.

Bucknell handed Cornell's Big Red its first defeat of the season, a 10-0 shutout in Ithaca, N.Y. Bucknell racked up 250 yards on the ground on the way to its second triumph over the Big Red in 28 tries.

Brown jumped back into the thick of the Ivy race with an impressive 31-12 thrashing of Princeton. Slick Rick Villella chewed up 114 yards and registered two touchdowns as the Tigers truckled to a relentless Bruin attack. Quarterback Larry Carbone smoothly marshalled the Brown battalion, accumulating 206 yards of total offense.

The Tigers' offense managed no more than a meow, and ace running back Chris Crissy gained only 55 yards. Brown evened its Ivy slate at 1-1 after an opening loss to Yale. Princeton holds the same record by virtue of an upset victory over defending champ Dartmouth opening day.

The Big Green has turned in decidedly diminutive performances so far, showing no indication of a spirited title defense. Dartmouth has yet to win a game in three tries, and Holy Cross thumped coach Joe Yukica's squad, 13-7, this weekend.

Yukica must feel sympathy pains for Restic: Dartmouth has temporarily lost its first two quarterbacks. Jeff Dufresne, last year's second-leading rusher in the Ivies, mustered only 32 yards.

If one thing appears certain in the Ivies at this juncture, it is that Penn and Columbia will wind up near the bottom of the heap. The Lions edged the Quakers, 12-7, in an uninspired matchup. Penn recorded only a seven-yard touchdown by fullback Jim Mullowney in becoming the first college football team to play 1000 games.

Columbia's Joe Cabrera rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown, but Penn thwarted four Columbia possessions with interceptions. However, Penn could not sustain any offense either.
