Kent State Settlement

CLEVELAND, Ohio--A lengthy legal battle by the victims of the 1970 Kent State University shootings ended yesterday with a $675,000 settlement and a statement of regret by Gov. James A. Rhodes and 27 present and former National Guard members.

The statement said, "The tragedy of May 4, 1970 should not have occurred," but did not pinpoint responsibility for the shootings.

Settlement

Dean Kahler, who was paralyzed below the waist as a result of the shootings, received $350,000, the largest part of the settlement. The other eight wounded students received amounts between $15,000 and $42,500, while the families of the four slain students received $15,000 each.

"We got everything we wanted and more," said Sanford Jay Rosen, the lawyer for all the students.
