Wendy Carle Leads Hoopsters To Double Win Over Weekend

Wendy Carle went on a one-woman rampage in New England this weekend, leading the 6-4 Harvard women's basketball team to a 57-32 triumph over Keene State College in Keene, N.H. on Friday and a 59-47 win over Williams in Williamstown, Mass. on Saturday.

After a slow start this season, Carle has developed into a potent offensive weapon, scoring 45 points in the Crimson's last three games.

Shifting Up

The hoopsters took a while to get in gear at Keene State, as they led by only eight points at the end of the first half, but Carle's 12 points and hot hands, and 12 more points by Gillian Raney, made for an easy Harvard win. Carle also collected 14 rebounds.

"It was definitely Wendy's game. She played a superb game," Betsy Brachmann, team manager, said yesterday.

In the Williams contest, the Crimson again started slowly, falling behind 28-23 at the half. So freshman center Karen Smith, who was recently called up from the junior varsity, took charge under the boards, and let Carle go to work from the outside.

Carle was impressive as she hit 8-of-18 from the field and led all scorers with 19 points. Her jumper with five and a half minutes remaining put the cagers ahead for good.

The Crimson has won five of its last six games before the exam break. The team resumes action January 31 against Dartmouth at the IAB.
