Track Team Routs Bates, 73-27; Tally Nine First-Place Spots

The Harvard women's track team upped its season record to 1-1 yesterday with a decisive victory over Bates, 73-27, at the Indoor Track and Tennis building. The tracksters took first in nine of the 12 events, sweeping four and winning both relays.

Coach Pappy Hunt was pleased with his team's "very impressive" performance. "I was happy to see the girls bounce back," said Hunt, referring to the 70-39 loss to the University of New Hampshire in December. "The U.N.H. meet was much closer than the score indicated. We were in every race until the last 20 yards."

Pleased

The Crimson took an early lead with a 1-2 finish in the opening event, the shot put, behind freshman Kim Johnson (39 ft. 8 3/4-in.) and Lisa Westlake (31 ft. 11 3/4-in.). Soon after, the Harvard team of Kim Clermont, Sarah Chubb, Kathy Dorsey and Pat Gopaul won the 880-relay with a time of 1:52.3. Score, Harvard 13, Bates 1.

In the one mile run, Karla Amble took an early lead while Kristen Metz and Joan Corsiglia battled it out for second and third. Corsiglia let loose in the last lap, though, and gave Amble a run for her money, coming in .2 seconds behind Amble (5:20.9).

Bates closed the gap somewhat with a victory in the 440-yd. dash and first and second in the high jump. Bates' Sue MacDougall set a track record in the high jump with a 5-ft. 5-in. leap. But Harvard came right back as Sue Harper took the 60-yd. hurdles in 9.5 seconds. Harper was the only Crimson participant in this event.

You Gotta Believe

Back-to-back sweeps in the 60-yd. dash and 880-yd. run then put Harvard in command, 50-13. Honors went to Gopaul in the dash (7.6) and co-captain Sarah Linsley in the half-mile (2:21.9). Kathy Rice outdistanced her competitors in the long jump at 17 ft. 53/4 in. while Harper's 15 ft 8 3/4 in. was good for a third. A second place finish by Chubb in the 220-yd. run and Harvard led, 59-27.

The Crimson earned the remaining 20 points with a sweep in the 2-mile run and a victory in the 1-mile relay. Kat Taylor led the field in the 2 mile, 30 seconds ahead of the next Harvard competitor.

The Tracksters have a tough schedule ahead. Harvard will host the Greater Boston Championships on Friday, February 2 at 2 p.m. in which Boston University is the favored team.
