Jane Opel Becomes Director Of Radcliffe Alumnae Group

By Justina K. Carlson

Jane Rainie Opel '50, formerly assistant director of Alumnae Affairs for classes and reunions at Radcliffe, assumed a position as executive director of the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association and associate director of Alumnae Affairs of Radcliffe College, on July 1, 1978.

As executive director, Opel is responsible for working with Radcliffe Clubs and Alumnae Committees across the country, providing assistance for the educational and scholarship fund-raising activities these groups plan.

From Manager to Executive

Opel said her new job involves a change from "managerial" to "executive" duties. Previously, Opel was directly in charge of running Radcliffe reunions. Now, she oversees the arrangements for 11 or 12 reunions per year.

Opel's duties also include co-ordinating alumni travel programs, and working on Radcliffe's Centennial Celebration plans.

Opel replaces Barbara Norton, who is now the new director of the Cronkite Center. Norton will work co-ordinating women's activities there as part of a plan to utilize the building as a women's center.

The plan, originated by President Horner, is designed to "give Radcliffe a focus" by bringing under one roof different Radcliffe programs and events.

Opel, who received the Radcliffe Management Training Program Certificate in 1951 and who has worked as an interviewer, personnel manager and teacher's aid, says she is happy with her new position.

Opel says she looks forward to working with alumni, and to the "challenge of developing new programs" in keeping with the Alumni Association's role as an "ongoing" organization.
