Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
AT LEAST ONE director of admissions at Harvard may be running scared in anticipation of a pro-Alan Bakke decision by the Supreme Court. Dr. Oglesby Paul '38, new director of admissions at the Medical School, is pushing for the elimination of a special minority admissions subcommittee of the full Med School admissions committee. Paul says he doesn't agree with the "segregation" of any group of applicants.
The full Med School committee completely disagrees with Paul--they voted last month to maintain the subcommittee and commended it for doing a fine job. Since the subcommittee was established in 1969, minority representation at the Med School has increased to almost 20 per cent of the student body.
Eliminating the subcommittee would be a backwards step in the Med School's effort to desegregate a traditionally white and male profession. The review committee the Med School faculty has appointed to deal with the issue should realize this, and send Paul packing to make sure his recruitment and admissions processes maintain and exceed the high standards they've already achieved.
