Laxwomen Compile 2-2 Record To Finish Sixth at N.E. Tourney

The women's lacrosse team traveled to Bridgewater State College over the weekend to take part in the New England College Women's Lacrosse Association Tournament, and came home with two victories and two losses.

Going into the tourney ranked fifth in New England, the squad's 2-2 showing placed them sixth in the 14-team field.

The University of Massachusetts emerged as the tournament champions, edging out runner-up Yale with a dramatic 5-4 overtime victory. Other teams finishing ahead of Harvard were, in order, the University of New Hampshire (UNH), Brown and Middlebury.

In the Beginning...

The Crimson laxwomen opened their tournament play with a 7-2 victory over the University of Vermont. Sarah Mleczko continued her high-scoring ways, netting five goals, while Ellen Seidler and freshman Sue St. Louis each tallied once.

Harvard next came up against powerful UNH, a team that had vanquished the laxwomen earlier in the season. The Wildcats made it two in a row, this time by a 9-2 margin, as St. Louis had both Harvard scores.

The Crimson came back from that setback to blank Plymouth State College, 6-0. Harvard's big gun again proved to be St. Louis, who tossed in four goals, while Wistie Oppenlander and Mleczko contributed one each.

In their final contest of the tourney the laxwomen faced Middlebury in a battle for fifth place. A hat trick from Mleczko and a single goal from St. Louis were not quite enough as the Panthers prevailed, 6-4.

All-Stars

One of the tournament's principal functions, besides determining a team champion, is to allow the formation of four All-Star teams, which will compete against club teams in the New England District Tournament at Smith College next weekend.

Harvard's Chris Sailer, a freshman, was chosen as cover point for the second team, while frosh Ann Velie was tabbed as a right defense wing for the third team and Ellen Seidler was named first home for the fourth squad.

Wendy Sonnabend, Carlyle Singer and Sukie Magraw were designated alternates for the fourth team.

One More Time

The laxwomen, sporting a 5-5 season record, will close out their spring campaign tomorrow afternoon when they face Northeastern University at Soldiers Field.
