Kirkland Fire

"That's totalled," said Scott Burns '80 yesterday in his Kirkland House suite, while holding the charred remains of his class notes for Economics 10, "Principles of Economics."

The notes were one of the few things damaged in a small fire that occurred 'yesterday afternoon when a burning log fell out of the fire place in Kirkland D-31. Residents quickly called the Cambridge Fire Department, but were able to put out the fire themselves.

The fire also singed a large rug and blackened a pair of skis. But the most immediate problem, said Burns, was the loss of the Ec 10 notes; the exam is this afternoon.

Edward J. Griffin, deputy chief of the Cambridge Fire Department, said yesterday that the problem of logs falling out of fireplaces is a fairly common one. He added, however, that Harvard dormitories have good safety records.

Griffin inspected the scene at Kirkland House, and said he thought the damage was minor.
