Women's Sprints Abbreviated; Gusting Winds Prevent Finals

The final and consolation races of this year's women's Eastern Sprints were postponed yesterday afternoon as the wind gusted to 40 knots in Pittsfield. Mass.

Only a few morning races were held before the remainder of the events were cancelled due to unrowable conditions. The Radcliffe varsity lightweights, who were seeded first, were among the boats that never made it out of the starting blocks.

The J.V. lightweights recorded the best finish among the Cliffe boats that did hit the waves. Despite crusing at a 32-stroke pace for one half of the race, the Radcliffe J.V.'s finished second behind Princeton's crew.

Crabs

In a varsity heavyweight heat, one of the women's seats came off its track after a major crab and the heavies ended in fifth place minus one oan.

The heavyweight novices wound up third in a heat that saw the University of Wisconsin victorious, while MIT captured the second spot. The novice lightweights stroked to fourth place in their race.

Last year the women's lightweight crew won the sprints at Lake Quinsigamond as B.U., Williams. Notre Dame and Penn followed in the Radcliffe wake.

The heavies claimed second place last season as Yale edged the Radcliffe boat by 1.4 seconds over the 1500-meter distance.
