Expos Instructor Wounded During Robbery Attempt

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Steven Erlanger '74, an expository writing teacher, was shot during a robbery attempt yesterday outside his hotel room in Ottawa, Canada.

Erlanger, who is also a copy editor in charge of foreign news for The Boston Globe, was in Ottawa working on a feature article for an upcoming special section on Canada.

A spokesman for The Globe said Erlanger was shot as he returned to his hotel room at about 8:30 a.m. As he bent down to pick up a newspaper, the assailant appeared, pointing a gun at Erlanger and demanding money. Erlanger began to rise, and the gun went off, wounding him in the abdomen.

Erlanger was taken to Ottowa General Hospital, where he was listed in good condition yesterday afternoon, prior to undergoing surgery for removal of the bullet.

Louise Peters, an administrative assistant in the Expos office, said yesterday, "We all think Steave is a fantastic guy and we feel very bad about the whole thing."
