A socialist-communist alliance and the ruling coalition parties were running nearly neck-and-neck in the first round of French parliamentary elections yesterday, diminishing chances for a leftist government.
Early computer projections had said leftist forces would score a fraction over 50 percent of the vote, less than pre-election polls had predicted they would receive.
Vote counting was called off late last night until today.
