Boston University will meet Providence College in a playoff game next Sunday in Providence to determine the ECAC's second representative to the NCAA tournament.
Boston College, the winner of the ECAC title, has an automatic berth in the NCAA playoff. In past years, the ECAC runner-up has filled the other slot.
The unprecedented playoff ordered by the ECAC results from upsets in last week's tournament competition that eliminated all four top-seeded teams--B.U., Cornell, Clarkson and RPI--from the ECAC finals.
Providence beat top-ranked B.U., 5-1, in the semifinal round Friday night, and lost to B.C. in the finals Saturday to finish as runner-up. B.U. won its consolation game against Brown to finish third in the ECAC Division I.
B.U. sports a season record of 27-1, with losses only at the hands of Yale and Providence.
