Trackmen Place Second, Women First in GBC's

It was a holiday for runners from Northeastern and Boston University in the second round of GBC competition Saturday afternoon at the Indoor Track and Tennis facility, as competitors from these two schools grabbed nine first places out of the eleven events held.

Northeastern, riding on the wave of the 36 points it had earned in the field events held Friday, came up the winner of the meet for the second year in a row with a point total of 95.

Harvard finished second with 81 points.

Next in line was B.U. with 40, followed by B.C. with 31, Brandeis with 17, MIT with seven and Tufts with two.

The competition in this year's meet was especially fierce, as new facility records were set in ten of the eleven running events, two of which represented new meet records as well.

Tom Mortimer of Northeastern was the first winner in Saturday's finals, with a facility mile record of 4:04.8, followed less than a second later by Buddy Bostick of Brandeis. Huskie runner Bruce Bickford, the winner of the mile event in the meet held here with Northeastern two weeks ago, finished third, edging out Bill Gajewski of B.C. by just a tenth of a second. Thad McNulty of Harvard took fifth.

Boston University swept the top two places in the 440-yd. dash, as Glen Cohen set a new facility record with a time of 49.18. Ryan Lamppa and Chris Nicodemus of Harvard took fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 60-yd. hurdles it was B.U. in the top slot again, as Terrier runner Tom Mahan beat out Paul Organ and John Dwyer of Harvard, setting yet another facility record.

Phil Hazard of B.C. needed a record-setting finish in the 60-yd. dash to over-come Northeastern powerhouse Ron Chambers, who had set a new mark of 6.3 seconds here just two weeks ago. Hazard covered the stretch with a time of 6.28, relegating Chambers to a second place finish.

In the 600, Crimson runner Brian McAndrews ran a tight race with Terrier Ray Ridley but Ridley hung on to win.

Northeastern middle distance specialist Marc Lech set a new facility record in the 880 with his first place finish, as Harvard runners John Chafee and Tim Sellers took second and third, in that order.

In the 1000-yd. run, B.U. harrier Rodney Garland dueled successfully with freshman John Murphy for the lead, rewriting another facility record, while in the two mile event John and Bob Flora grabbed the top two slots for Northeastern.

The three relay events were split, as the Brandeis team took top honors in the distance medley, Northeastern won the two mile, and B.U. won the mile.

Harvard had jumped out to an ealy 40-36 lead over Northeastern Friday evening by taking three first place finishes in the field division.

That same afternoon, the Harvard women's team served notice that it has arrived by winning the first women's indoor GBCs ever, beating five schools in the process, the nearest one by a ten point margin. Harvard had two firsts: Mary Howard in the 440, and the mile relay team of Howard, Anne Fine, Anne Bryan and Rian Smith.
