An unknown assailant stabbed to death a 23-year-old Cambridge woman on Ellery Street, about five blocks from Pennypacker dorm, at 1:10 a.m. yesterday.

The assailant apparently surprised her on her way home from Harvard Square, three blocks away, and stabbed her numerous times in the chest and neck, Cambridge police said yesterday.

The Woman, Julie Campbell, of Ellery Street, died in the operating room at Cambridge City Hospital.

State and Cambridge police searched a six-block area around the scene, but have no leads as of yet.

Investigators said that several apartments in the area have been burglarized over the past few months, and think this incident may be connected with the break-ins.

Ellery Street apartments mainly house college students and young working people, police said.
