The Harvard-Radcliffe Democratic Club last night chose Tamera M. Stanton '79 as the first female president in the club's history.
Stanton said she is "encouraged" to see that women are becoming increasingly active in political organizations at Harvard. "This is really nothing new, however," she added. "We have been participating in political groups here for quite a while."
As president of the club, Stanton said she hopes to expand club activities, especially to increase participation in political campaigns. "Since this is an election year, we hope to pick up on political involvement," she said.
The Democrats also voted last night to endorse a resolution banning discrimination based on sexual preference. The resolution, which is currently being considered for passage by the Cambridge City Council, prohibits discrimination against "gays and bisexual people" in employment, housing and public services.
