Booters Handle Penn With a Flourish

The Harvard women's soccer team bounced back from its heartbreaking 2-1 loss to UMass last Wednesday, crushing a visiting Wellesley eleven Saturday afternoon, 9-0. The Crimson's record is now 12-1.

Harvard striker Sue St. Louis began the onslaught after only 30 second of play. St. Louis snared the rebound of a shot by co-captain Julie Brynteson and whistled it into the lower left corner of the debutante net to make it 1-0, Harvard.

St. Louis notched her second goal at the eight-minute mark, grabbing a bounding pass from junior Ellen Hart at the right edge of the penalty area and slicing it past bewildered Wellesely goalie Jane Wilson.

One minute later, St. Louis took another Hart lead pass, sped down the right wing, and completed the hat trick with a blistering 15-yd. blast into the upper corner of the Wellesley net.

Brynteson followed St. Louis's hat trick with a goal of her own. Streaking down the left wing, Brynteson cut inside two visiting defenders and fired a shot past the out-stretched arms of Wilson to make it 4-0, Harvard.

Harvard Pressure

Crimson mentor Bob Scalise rested his starters following Brynteson's score, but Harvard continued to pressure the Wellesley goal, peppering Wilson with 30 first-half shots.

Substitute forward Janice Pelletier put the Crimson ahead 5-0 with a 4-yd. boot from the left side of the penalty area. Ellen Jakovic upped the margin to six when she grabbed a Gia Johnson centering pass, dribbled around a timid Wellesely defender, and slammed a shot past Wilson.

Crimson back Nina Marshal rounded out the first-half scoring, taking a pass from junior Vera Fatjova and lobbing a high shot into the top left corner of the Wellesley net.

The exhausted Harvard offense managed only two goals in the second half. Scalise moved Crimson standout goalie Barbara Mahon to left forward and Mahon responded by powering a 5-yd. boot past Wilson to make it 8-0, Harvard.

Finale

The Crimson's final tally came with ten minutes left in the game. Harvard co-captain Paula Levihn walked in one-on-one against Wilson, waited for Wilson to commit herself, then slipped a shot into the near corner for the Crimson's ninth goal.

Bring On Yale

"It was great to come roaring back after the UMass defeat," an excited coach Scalise said after the game. The booters host Yale at 1:30 p.m. Friday in their season finale.
