Booters Roll Over Smith, 6-1

"We beat them today because we played really smart ball," said jubilant co-captain Sue St. Louis after the women's varsity soccer team crushed Smith 6-1. The win upped the booters' record to 2-0.

After 11 minutes of play, Crimson wing Marcia Hamelin opened the scoring with a powerful across-the-crease smash from four yards out.

Snaked

Harvard co-captain Julie Brynteson made it 2-0 ten minutes later when she snaked a corner kick off the far post into the net. Freshman Cat Ferrante may have deflected the shot, but Brynteson received official credit for the tally.

Only two minutes after that goal, back striker Ellen Hart re-directed another Brynteson corner kick for Harvard's third tally.

Chipped

The Crimson's Kathy Batter rounded out the first half scoring when she took a Hamelin pass and chipped a shot over the Smith netminder.

The second half started slowly, as neither team could mount a successful attack. After eighteen minutes of scoreless play, Ellen Hart broke the trance with her second goal.

Recovery

Hart took a St. Louis pass from the right wing and popped in into the upper corner of the goal. Her two-goal performance marked her successful recovery from a preseason injury.

Although leading 5-0, the Crimson wouldn't let the Smith defenders alone. Ellen Jakovic added insult to injury when she netted her own rebound for Harvard's final score.

The downcast Smith eleven notched their sole tally with only four minutes left, when a Smith forward broke through Harvard's defense and slipped a shot past Crimson goalie Marlene Schoofs.

Harvard coach Bob Scalise was ecstatic over his team's performance, particularly freshmen Jakovic and Ferrante. The booters host B.C. Saturday morning on the Business School field.
