The previously unbeaten Harvard Women's cross country team lost to Princeton in the Big Three meet held yesterday at Yale.
"The loss gives them a little thing to yell about and we'll get them in the Easterns next week." Debbie Vogel, the Harriers' manager said after the 29-37 defeat.
Individual winner Lynn Jennings of Princeton led for the whole race and came home in a blistering 17:00 over the three mile course. Jennings, who is only a freshman, shattered the course record of 17:41 held by the Harriers' Anne Sullivan, who was second for most of the race but finished fourth in 17:23.
Harvard's top result came from runner up Paula Newnham, who ran a brisk 17:14 despite laboring with a slight sprain. Eighth-place finisher Carla Amble of Harvard had her best race since coming back from last year's sidelining injury with a time of 18:04.
Joanna Forman, who ran for the first time, finished twelfth in 18:17, three seconds behind her Crimson teammate Therese Sellers, who was eleventh overall.
Yale finished a distant third with 60 points. The meet result gives rise to a three-way deadlock for the Ivy lead between Harvard. Princeton and Yale, the latter having defeated Princeton in an earlier meet.
Vogel said that Princeton had too much depth for the Harriers this time around, but that they'll be ready come the Eastern Championships in Vermont next Saturday.
"It's the first time Paula has run against Lynn and she's ready to beat her next time," Vogel added.
