Only their own assumptions held them back. It is difficult to be objective or fair when you alread "know" that our western rational consciousness is in some way "right," when you "know" that the individual is sacred and must not submit himself to anything larger, like the Godhead or transcendent oneness with the world, when you are committed to the material world of things and have consigned mystical and visionary experiences to the hallucinations/delusions bin. Unfortunately you tend to produce a narrow work when you assume the conclusions before beginning the research.
