Crimson Racquets Are Swinging At New England Championships

Three of Harvard's four entries in the women's New England tennis championships advanced to the third round after yesterday's opening day of play at Amherst.

Seeded number one, freshman marvel Betsy Richmond lost a total of only four games in her two opening matches to move up to the third round.

Sophomore singles player Martha Roberts also landed in the round of 16, gutting out a close three-setter in first-round play before destroying her second-round foe, 6-1, 6-0.

The Crimson's first doubles team, Katie Ditzler and Meg Meyer, picked up easy, straight-set victories over first and second round opponents from Clark and Mount Holyoke.

At second doubles, Sally Roberts and Kristen Mertz won their first match but fell to top-seeded Dartmouth in the second round.

"We have a real good shot at the championship," Crimson coach Peter Felske said last night.
