A delegation from the People's Republic of China has reached an agreement with University officials to initiate an exchange program between U. S. and Chinese universities beginning as early as January.

The agreement came following yesterday's meeting between the Chinese delegation, led by Chou Pei-Yuan, former president of Peking University, representatives of the University's East Asian studies program and several high-ranking University officials.

The program could involve Ph. D.'s, faculty members, advanced graduate students and undergraduates. The size and make-up of either has not yet been determined.

However, Dean Rosovsky said he believed that the exchange would include "very few undergraduates."

Patrick G. Maddox, director of External Affairs for the Council on East Asian studies, said the agreement is "a departure from the earlier Chinese position that such arrangements would be subsequent to the normalization of diplomatic relations."
