"We need a pope who's a nice guy. Someone you can trust, with a good sense of humor. Peter Gomes is that kind of guy," Denis T. Kennedy '81, co-organizer of the Gomes For Pope Committee, said last week.
Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals, and minister in Harvard's Memorial Church, was unaware of the Gomes For Pope campaign until it was well underway, Tom W. Flynn, another Gomes supporter said last week.
"Gomes's reaction when he happened to walk past the headquarters one day and saw our signs proves that there is substance to that nice guy image. He accepted our nomination on the spot. We knew he wouldn't mind being pope" Flynn added.
"I knew nothing of the campaign until I walked into Lowell House one day and the superintendent addressed me as "Your Holiness" Gomes said Sunday.
"As for my chances of being elected, I think I'm literally a dark horse," Gomes, who is black, said. "I have nothing against moving to Rome, but I'd rather it were Canterbury" he added.
