Gov. Michael S. Dukakis appointed James Vorenberg '49, Professor of Law, yesterday to head the new five-member state ethics commission.

The commission will oversee the financial disclosures of major state and county officials and probe charges of conflicts of interest and bribery.

"In broadest terms, the purpose of the commission is to try to end the influence of money in the decision-making process within state government," Vorenberg said yesterday.

Vorenberg, a former master of Dunster House, served as an associate special prosecuter in the Watergate probe from 1973 to 1975 and later served as an adviser to the state Senate Ethics Committee.
