Another Bad Break For Hockey Team; Heel Sidelines Jack Hughes for Month

By Bill Scheft

The injury list grows on, and with each toll of the death bell it gets to the point where if you want to watch Harvard hockey in action you have to pull up a rinkside wheelchair at Stillman Infirmary.

Jack Hughes was the latest to be laid low by ailments, as the Crimson's star defenseman will be out four to six weeks with a fractured heel sustained in Tuesday's game at Boston College.

During the first period of Harvard's eventual 11-3 loss to the Eagles, the sophomore backliner slid feet first into the boards and jammed the back post of his skate against his heel. Although Hughes finished out the remainder of the period, he was forced to sit out the final two stanzas of the contest.

Jackie joins a sick bay roster which has now swelled to six key players. Bryan Cook (jaw), Paul Yeomalakis (thumb), Bobby McDonald (elbow), Murray Dea (knee), and Gene Purdy (shoulder) are the other players currently out of action, and Purdy, who was supposed to be a definite starter against Northeastern tonight, is now doubtful.

The loss of Hughes, though, is undeniably crucial. Jack has been the one consistent bright spot in what has otherwise been a roller coaster year behind the Harvard blue line. Now it is unlikely that last season's ECAC Rookie of the Year will recover in time for the Beanpot next month.

And so a tough road lies ahead for the icemen, beginning tonight at Watson Rink against Northeastern. Coach Billy Cleary carries a personal ten-game unbeaten streak against the Huskies into tonight's clash.

Northeastern has shown flashes of promise in skating to its 5-4-1 ECAC record, but they have been all too infrequent. At any rate, the player to watch is 25-year-old walk-on freshman goalie Ed Arrington, whose play (3.58 g.a.) has been the big story for the Huskies.
