Business corporations in 1978 will be hiring more engineering and accounting majors than they have in the past, Frank S. Endicott, placement director emeritus at Northwestern University, said yesterday.
Big Business
In a survey he conducted in December, Endicott found jobs are available in the business sector, but those without business or engineering training will have trouble locating them. Endicott emphasized that his survey concentrated on large corporations that usually hire graduates with business majors.
He said the corporations expected the average starting salary for engineers to be $1390 per month, $1053 per month for accounting majors, and $950 per month for liberal arts majors.
Endicott, who has conducted annual surveys for the past 32 years, said his study is a good indicator of the economy. "Corporations usually increase their hiring when they expect the economy to improve," he said.
According to the report on the Class of '76, filed last year by the Office of Career Services and Off-Campus Learning, the number of graduates going into business increased from 10.5 per cent in 1975 to 14.9 per cent in 1976. Figures for the Class of '77 have not yet been compiled.
