Construction work on the Med Area power plant, already delayed by more than a year when Harvard had to hire a new engineering firm to improve the design developed by its original firm, will not proceed beyond the foundation for at least another month.

The board of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) this week asked its attorney to draw up a statement granting the project necessary approval, but the Department of Environmental Quality Engineering (DEQE) must also approve the project.

Final approval from the environmental quality department will not come for at least 30 days, a DEQE official said this week.

And the BRA's approval, according to the board chairman's recommendation, will be granted on condition that the Medical School and affiliated hospitals agree to draw power from the plant.
