Loren Friedman

A graduate student in cell biology at Tulane University, New Orleans, Loren Friedman decided to come north for the summer because the Summer School offered a course he wanted to take, and because he hoped he could get a job working in one of the biological labs up here.

This second objective was more difficult to accomplish than he'd hoped, however. Friedman said yesterday he spent a lot of time looking around the University for a job, but wasn't able to find one--partly, he said, because a lot of professors seem to have reserved researching spots for people on work-study grants, even though there aren't always such candidates for the posts.

Nevertheless, Friedman said he is enjoying his summer here. While the cell biology course is a little less challenging than he had hoped it would be, he spends his spare time working on his master's thesis on immunology and cell surfaces. He is also auditing an extension course in immunology at night.

In fact, he said, he likes Cambridge so much he may try to stay here this fall. If he can find a job.
