Yes, there is life after Harvard--

Trying out a new act

For most seniors (successful preprofessionals excluded) commencement means cutting their immediate ties with Cambridge and entering the world for which Harvard prepared them. However, seniors Sarah McClusky and Lorenzo Mariani will spend the summer with six other undergraduates running an experimental theater at the Loeb.

The Summer Ex- will serve as a hectic break for McClusky who intends to audition in the fall for theaters in Cleveland and Chicago. "If I get the nerve up," she says she may try out for "Saturday Night Live."

McClusky says the Summer Ex-, a first for the Loeb, will be run like an off-Broadway theater with the small group of undergraduates doing all of the technical and business work, from building sets to collecting tickets.

Following the traditional route of the struggling actor, the crew will support themselves with menial jobs in the day while running the theater at night. McClusky plans on driving a shuttle bus.

McClusky has substantial theatre experience at Harvard. During this past year she had the title role in "Candida" and was in "Do It Yourself." Because of Harvard's repressive attitude towards combining performing arts with academics, turning creative endeavors into extracurricular activities, McClusky says, she hopes the Summer Ex-will help fill the void by providing an in-depth exposure through actual experience, a cram course for her fall auditions.
