Cinco de Mayo

Dancing, poetry reading and discussions about the Chicano heritage are activities planned for this weekend's Cinco de Mayo celebration at Gutman Library and the Law School, Harvard-Radcliffe RAZA officers said yesterday.

Luis R. Fraga '77-3, treasurer of Harvard-Radcliffe RAZA, said yesterday the Chicano community celebrates Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, as the day Mexico expelled French rule from its borders.

Juan J. Sanchez, a second-year graduate School of Education student and a coordinator of this weekend's program, said yesterday that 500 to 800 people from all over New England are expected to attend this weekend's festivities, which are open to the public.

"The celebration symbolizes a resistance by Chicanos against the American culture destroying the cultural characteristics of our people," Sanchez said.
