Boycott J.P. Stephens

IN THE PAST two weeks, the Cambridge City Council and the Harvard Coop board of directors have taken commendable action in moving to support the nation-wide boycott of J.P. Stevens Co. products.

On April 25, the Cambridge City Council unanimously endorsed a resolution by Mayor Alfred E. Vellucci endorsing the boycott. That week, the Coop board of directors voted to observe the boycott and to remove all current stocks of J.P. Stevens merchandise--$2800 worth. It is heartening to note that the Coop board's decision came in response to requests by Coop members and local residents.

The actions of the city council and the Coop board represent two significant first steps in observing the boycott and helping the Stevens workers gain the union representation to which they are legally entitled. We urge local residents and merchants to take similar actions.
