Leverett, Currier, Quincy, Kirkland and the Union To Serve Hot Breakfasts

Leverett, Kirkland, Quincy and Currier Houses and the Union will be the only dining halls to serve a full hot breakfast next year, while other Houses will offer only a Sunday-style meal consisting of cold cereals, toast and beverages.

Dean Fox said yesterday he hopes the hot breakfasts could be rotated among all the Houses, so that each House would serve a full meal once every three years.

"This is the most economical group of dining halls that we could open," Fox said.

Unfair

Charles H. Diana '78, president of the Mather House Council, said yesterday the exclusion of the Mather and Dunster Houses from the group serving full breakfasts would be unfair unless some rotation scheme is implemented.

"People were naturally pretty negative about the idea when we first heard about it and now that it's definite they'll be more vocal. The Leverett dining hall is pretty far out of the way, while the Dunster dining hall is near to both Leverett and Mather," he said.

Fox said extraordinary savings will result from serving only cold breakfasts in Dunster and Mather Houses, since those two Houses operate a separate kitchen.

Leverett House, along with Kirkland, Eliot, Lowell and Winthrop Houses, is part of the central kitchen system, which must be opened for breakfast anyway.

Hanna Hastings, co-master of North House, said yesterday she and J. Woodland Hastings, master of North House, along with most North students, are very upset that Currier would be the only Quad House to serve full breakfasts.

"Breakfast means a lot at North House, maybe because our students don't come back for lunch. I believe more people eat breakfast at North than any other House--59 per cent," she said.

Hastings added that she would continue to "try very hard" to keep the hot breakfast at North House.

No Hot Breakfast

North House will not serve the hot breakfast because it is too small and because the North House dining hall is divided into several serving lines in different rooms, Fox said.

Fox defended the mix of Houses to serve full breakfast because it would cause little student discomfort, adding "Few people will walk as far as most freshmen walk to meals every day."

The House groups are: Leverett, Mather, and Dunster; Adams, Quincy, and Lowell; Eliot, Kirkland, and Winthrop; and South, North, and Currier.

The five dining halls serving hot breakfasts will extend their present hours of breakfast operation until 10 a.m., Fox said.
