Twenty people who attended a meeting of the South House committee last night overwhelmingly voted to rename the House before its new dining hall opens in 1979.
James M. Redwine '77, House Committee Chairman, said yesterday the students in the House will quickly approve the proposal. The only problem he forsees is complaints from disgruntled alumnae, but he said choosing a name of someone who was instrumental in Radcliffe's growth for the House could overcome the objections.
Potential names for the House include Mary Bunting, Thomas Palmer, William Brattle, James Walker and Francis Boardman Crowinshield.
Mulqueeny House?
James Mulqueeny Jr. '80, president of the House committee, said he plans to do more research on women in Schlesinger Library to see if there are any other possible female candidates. "We don't want to be stuck with leftovers," Mulqueeny said.
There is no set precedent for renaming a House, but Mulqueeny plans to visit President Horner and the masters of South House to receive their approval.
If the committee gets approval from the administration, House members will vote on the motion within a week.
