Radcliffe Water Polo Dunked; B.C. Overwhelming in Victory

By Laura E. Schanberg

Unknown to many Harvard students, the Radcliffe water polo team has been flourishing this year, despite four losses.

The Radcliffe water polo team lost its fourth game Saturday as superpower Boston College thrashed the 'Cliffe, 11-2. The loss put the Crimson waterballers one game under .500 with a 3-4 record.

Not Even Enough

Radcliffe played B.C. even for the first and last quarters, but the Eagles ranked seventh in New England, exploded for four goals in both the second and third periods. The Crimson's eight major penalties aided the B.C. cause, but their opponents' superior passing and shooting skills were the real downfall for the less experienced Radcliffe women.

The 'Cliffe scored once in each half. During the first quarter, captain Karen Bromberg's shot from the left side hit the right goalpost and bounced back into play. Teammate Sharon Bechman grabbed the rebound and easily flipped in the ball.

The second tally came in the fourth period, when Crimson goalie Laura Garwin (20 saves for the day) spied senior Mindy Werner alone in front of the Eagles' net and tossed the ball a almsot the length of the pool.

From there, Werner made short work of the goal.

Despite the lopsided score, captain Bromberg said the team played their best game of the year. "The score makes it sound like a real slaughter, but you have to consider that if anyone else around here played them, it would probably be 25-0," she said.

A Top Team

The Crimson established itself as one of the top teams in the Boston area with two victories over B.U. and one over MIT. Their losses have come at the hands of B.C. (twice), Slippery Rock--the top-ranked team in the country--and UMass. The Crimson season continues this Saturday with a tournament at MIT.

Maybe the only reason 'Cliffe water polo doesn't usually make the sports page is the time of many of the games--weekend mornings. After all, even Bromberg admitted "some of the team members have trouble waking up for the matches."
