Mayor Honors 'Grand Bostonians' With Gala Dinner

By Diana R. Laing

Mayor Kevin H. White toasted seven "Grand Bostonians" with champagne and presented them with genuine Boston bricks and caricatures of themselves as part of an evening ceremony at the Parkman House in Boston last night.

In paying homage to the assembled guests that included five prominent Harvard alumni, White said, "Each is different--the paths they followed were their own. But the common threads are clear: high aspirations, higher achievements, all the while governed by a constant and profound reverence for the human spirit."

In a lighter vein, Vice Mayor Edward T. Sullivan recalled the early careers of the distinguished seven, telling how Leverett Saltonstall '14 had decided after losing the lieutenant governorship that he might have to content himself with a permanent position as an alderman in Newton.
