GENEVA--The World He$1th Organization (WHO) yesterday asked for $4 million and donations of vaccine to help fight a resurgence of smallpox in East Africa, six months after the disease was thought to be extinct.

A report to WHO's annual meeting said the organization needed at least that amount to find and cure cases of the disease in Somalia, where a form of smallpox still lingers.

Citing the "considerable danger to adjacent countries," a draft resolution sponsored by WHO director Dr. Halfdan Mahler stressed the need for immediate action to eradicate the last known region in which the disease is still a threat.
