'Cliffe Tennis Team Establishes Winning Form, Trounces Smith

The Radcliffe tennis express jumped back on the winning track yesterday, railroading Smith College 7-2 and evening up their record at 1-1.

Although the Crimson surrendered both the first seed singles and doubles, the team brought home victories through the rest of the line-up.

Freshman sensation Katie Dirtzler won a squeaker on the second spot, 7-5, 7-5, capturing a tiebreaker in the final set. Patty Wen battled for three sets, but emerged on top of Smithie Brenda Banta, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Teamed together in number three doubles, Ditzler and Wen demolished their opponents, 6-1, 6-0, in one of the most lopsided wins of the match.

At the fourth and fifth positions, Rita Funaro and Jean Gumowitz handily shelved the Smith racketeers, winning, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-2, 6-4, respectively. They also joined forces at the last duo slot to manhandle their challengers, 6-1, 6-0.

Gloom

The first and third singles matches were halted because of impending gloom. Sally Roberts and Denise Thal played their doubles matches before their solo contests and ended up ahead in only one of the three encounters.

Paired up together, they lost the doubles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, in a tiebreaker. When darkness prevailed, Roberts was down a set and officially lost her match while Thal won a tiebreaker imposed when the third set of her match was even at one game apiece
