'Cliffe Lax Trounces Wellesley Taking Fourth Straight Contest

By Laura E. Schanberg

The Radcliffe lacrosse team stretched its record to 4-1 yesterday, posting its fourth straight victory in an 11-1 drubbing of Wellesley on the road.

The Crimson laxwomen took command early, scoring five goals in the first half to Wellesley's lone tally. The outmanned Wellesley squad never recovered.

Despite the absence of freshman Sarah Mleczko's big scoring punch, the Radcliffe offense still showed plenty of power. Sue Abkowitz and Wisty Oppenlander both notched hat tricks to lead the game's scorers. Carrie Minot and Betsy McIntyre contributed two tallies apiece, and captain Ann Johnson added a single goal to round out the scoring.

Deceiving

Coach Debi Field said yesterday the game was actually closer than the score indicated. "Suzie MacGraw, our goalkeeper, had two absolutely unbelievable saves," she added.

MacGraw came up with the stellar saves on a pair of Wellesley breakaways. "I had to go out and stuff the shots and luckily I did," she noted with relief.

Captain MacGraw did not think that Wellesley was much competition, noting that "They played rough, but they don't have much skill."

MacGraw also praised the defensive line of Julie Corman, at left wing, Aryle Singer at point, Laurie Benton at cover point, and Lisa Chang at the other wing spot. "Julie just played her usual game, consistent and phenomenal," she said.

The team will go up against Springfield College, a traditional powerhouse, at Soldier's Field on Wednesday.
