Slippery Rock Dominates BC, UMass, 'Cliffe in Water Polo

By Keith Salkowski

The Radcliffe Water Polo team hosted a four-squad round-robin tournament at the IAB Friday and Saturday, but the competition proved a bit too much for the 'Cliffie swimmers.

Slippery Rock State College, winners of the National AAU water polo competition, and Boston College, acknowledged as the best team in New England, easily dominated Radcliffe and the University of Massachusetts.

Outscoring its opponents by a combined 32-7 mark, Slippery Rock won all three of its contests. Radcliffe fell victim to the Pennsylvania powerhouse 10-1.

BC finished in second place with a 2-1 record. The Terriers bested the 'Cliffe by a decisive 12-1 score. Maura Costin tallied Radcliffe's lone goal.

Nice Host

The 'Cliffe team played their best game against third place UMass, dropping that contest 15-5. Freshman Sharon Beckman scored all five Radcliffe goals, giving her six for the tournament.

Despite Radcliffe's poor showing, team captain Karen Bromberg was happy with the team's performance. "Even though we came in last place we played very well," she said.
