Dean Fox Says Union to Open On Weekends

Dean Fox announced that the Freshman Union will be open for all weekend meals next year in a memorandum circulated to the members of the Committee on Housing and Undergraduate Life (CHUL) on Tuesday.

The added operational costs will not be added to the student board rate for the academic year 1977-78, Fox said in the report. "We hope to absorb the added costs through further economies in the food service system," he said yesterday.

Limiting the breakfast menus in eight of the Houses will partially offset the increased costs, saving Food Services $102,000 of the $165,300 projected added cost next year.

According to the memo, Currier, the Freshman Union, and three as yet unspecified River Houses will serve full breakfasts throughout the week and the weekend, while the other eight Houses will limit their breakfast menus, saving substantially on labor costs.

The limited menu will include orange juice, cold cereals, toast, muffins, preserves and beverages.

"The rearrangement of breakfast service will affect far fewer than half the students in the houses, since only around 45 per cent of all upperclassmen take breakfast, and fewer still avail themselves of the full menu [entree, hot cereal] currently offered," Fox said in his memorandum.

There will be only one serving line in the Union for weekend meals, Fox said in the memorandum, adding "we expect it to be workable because unlike weekdays, there are no rush hours or peak load problems ...and the number of students taking meals during weekends is slightly lower."

"I do not anticipate any problems with reopening the Union on weekends," Frank J. Weissbecker, director of Food Services said yesterday. "You can expect that we will do the same outstanding job that we do Monday through Friday."

"I think it is a very good idea, because eating at the Union is more convenient for freshmen, while freshmen can go to any House they want to when they are shopping around," Brigette Bilyeu '80 said yesterday.
