Ed Bordley, a starter on the Harvard wrestling team this past winter, swept through four opponents the first weekend of spring recess to win the 167 lb. title in the National Blind Wrestling Tournament.
A week later, in the New England Amateur Athletic Union Tournament hosted by Harvard, Crimson sophomore Craig Beling downed four foes to win the heavyweight title while Tom Bixby, a two-year Harvard starter, took five of seven bouts to finish third in the 158-lb. competition.
Great Expectations
Crimson coach Johnny Lee said yesterday that he had expected Bordley to do well in the Blind Tournament, held on the campus of Western Illinois University, because he was one of only a handful of the 160 entrants who had wrestled at the college varsity level.
Lee was also highly encouraged by Beling's superlative effort in the AAU get-together. The sophomore was a starting linebacker on the football team by the Yale game last fall, and saw a lot of playing time on the lacrosse team as a defenseman last spring. He will be one of the few true athletes wrestling at heavyweight in New England next year, and Lee expects great things from him.
