Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
The winds of fortune blew hot and cold for the Harvard and Radcliffe sailing teams over spring break, as the men breezed to a big victory while the women floundered in defeat.
The Harvard armada had a pleasant vacation, edging the Naval Academy on Easter Sunday to capture the prestigious Owen Trophy for the third time in the last four years. Senior Tom Reps sailed home with low-point honors as the meet's top skipper, as he and classmate Terry Neff bested the rest of the 12-team field in the whitecaps off West Point.
Coach Michael Horn found a good omen in the squadron's victory. "Every time we win the Owen Trophy, we go on to do well in the Northeastern championships," he noted confidently.
But the weather wasn't so nice up in New England. After heavy winds forced the cancellation of Saturday's meet against the powerful Tufts women, the 'Cliffe travelled to the Coast Guard Academy for a regional invitational. But the New London breezes blew the wrong way, and the women could manage only a fourth-place finish.
"As soon as we get some more practice we ought to be able to do better," senior Pam Mack explained--"we've just got to get some more boat time." And maybe pray for a more favorable breeze.
