Mower-Stoughton, Lowell Win Intramural Basketball Crowns

By Laura E. Schanberg

Mower-Stoughton defeated Weld South, 45-33, to capture the freshman intramural basketball championship Tuesday night.

Spurred by the accurate outside shooting of John Kittle and Dave Neuschwander, Mower jumped to a nine-point lead midway through the first half. Behind the scoring of their 6-ft. 3-in. center, Rick Nash, and the playmaking of Dave Shryock, Weld narrowed the gap to a single point by intermission.

Wayne Forester, coach of the victorious Mower-Stoughton team, said Weld's downfall was poor shooting in the second half.

"We stuck close through the first half, but then we really collapsed," Tom Haskell, player-coach of Weld South said yesterday. "I just don't think we layed well overall," he added.

Mower, which entered the tournament with one of the worst regular season records in the league, beat co-favorites Greenough and Hurlbut to advance to the final round of the competition. "A lot of people lost money betting against us," Forester said yesterday. "No one guessed we'd win," he added.

A team of freshman proctors will play Mower-Stoughton one day next week.

The Big Boys

In house intramural competition, Lowell House took the A division title with a perfect 14-0 record. High scorers for the team were Steve Bailoff and senior tutors, Mike Collins and Gary Rinck.

Leverett closed the season behind Lowell, while in B division action Eliot House won, finishing just ahead of Winthrop.

No house tournaments will be held this year because each team played so many regular season games, a spokesman for the Intramural Athletic Office said yesterday.
