NEW DELHI, India--Prime Minister Indira Gandhi lost her seat in parliament and her ruling Congress party suffered extensive losses in early returns of the Indian national elections.

After learning of her defeat, Gandhi lifted the state of emergency that has existed in India for 21 months. It is not clear whether the loss of her seat will result in Gandhi's resignation as prime minister.

Gandhi's son, Sanjay, failed to win his first bid for parliamentary election. Both he and his mother lost to candidates who had previously been imprisoned under the emergency laws.
