Housing

Freshman housing assignments are being distributed today at the Union and the Quad Houses. Their distribution was held up for two weeks pending approval of the Fox Proposal by Dean Rosovsky last Thursday.

This year the housing assignments are different from last years' in that freshmen are asked to put down only their first three choices instead of listing all 12.

The new system considers all first choices, then all second choices and finally all third choices. It is designed to maximize one's first choice. However after one's first three choices have been filled one is assigned at random to one of nine remaining houses.

The approval of the Fox proposal and the decision to let Kirkland House have a 1.5-to-1 sex ratio changes the housing picture significantly from last year. It increases the possibility of sophomores being placed in the Quad and of sophomore women being assigned to Kirkland House.

Freshman interviewd yesterday felt that the new assignment procedure made housing selection much more random. Robert Kunzig '80 said that the new plan was designed more to make things easier for the administration than to help the students.

Anne B. Spence, assistant dean of the College, said yesterday that housing assignments are due on March 25th, a week from this Friday. She added that it will take several weeks to process them and freshmen will not receive their housing assignments until a week after spring break at the earliest.
