Student Food Services Critic Leaves Job, Charges Harassment

By J. MARK Lavergne

A spokesman for a student group critical of the operations of University dining halls said yesterday he left his North House dining hall job last week because his supervisor and fellow workers "harrassed" him after he publicly criticized the University Food Service.

Gregory S. Sergienko '80, chief spokesman for the John Harvard Memorial Society, said yesterday he was assigned extra duties on February 22, the night after his criticism of Food Service waste appeared in The Crimson.

"After the article came out I was the only one in the kitchen whose work increased," Sergienko said. He added that harassment from fellow workers forced him to leave on March 6 and that he may file a complaint with Archie C. Epps III, dean of students.

Passing the Buck

Frances H. Sweeney, Radcliffe dining hall manager, said yesterday she doubts Sergienko's claims and added that though his work load increased, "it may not be our fault."

Sergienko specifically charges that the cleaning of dining hall refrigerators became part of his daily duties after his comments became public.

George W. Westcott, North House dining hall supervisor, said yesterday the cleaning of refrigerators was one of Sergienko's duties after the February 22 article appeared, but he said he could not recall if Sergienko cleaned them before that date.

Sergienko said the harassment by fellow workers included a verbal threat to poison him, and closing of a refrigerator door while he was inside cleaning it.

Westcott denied both charges yesterday. Susan A. Sandberg '80, a Radcliffe dining hall worker, said yesterday the dining hall supervisor give "certain jobs to people they like."

Frank J. Weissbecker, director of Food Services, was not available for comment yesterday.
