Icemen Cool Feisty Princeton, 5-2

PRINCETON, N.J.--The Harvard icemen survived a physical final period by the Tigers of Princeton, and went on to a 5-2 triumph here at Baker Rink last night before a near capacity crowd of 1600.

Crimson goaltender Brian Petrovek could have taken an exam for the first 39 minutes of the contest, as Harvard's defense checked the opposition effectively, allowing the Tigers only 13 shots on the cage over the first two stanzas. Not until the third period did Petro have to display his Beanpot form.

John Cochrane opened the scoring at 3:44 of the first with a slapshot from the top of the left circle after Jack Hughes and Billy Hozack (who would both finish with a goal and three assists in the tilt) had accompanied him on a three-on-two break.

Gene Purdy came up with an unassisted shorthanded goal on a pretty backhand seven minutes later to silence a partisan crowd that had been begging long and hard for a Harvard penalty.

The abundance of Crimson jerseys in the crease began to perturb Princeton goalie Fred Cherne, so he began shoving and was called for interference. The power play wrath of the Hughes Corporation then made it 3-0, with George scoring on assists from Jack and Hozack.

With two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the middle period, however, mutual tempers began to flare. Murray Dea was called for elbowing and Princeton waited until a few seconds after its power play to ruin Petrovek's shutout, with Trevor Kilburn doing the honors on a slapshot with 16 seconds left in the period.

The zambonied ice had hardly dried at the start of the final 20 minutes when both teams started bullying again. Whistles blew, and 24 minutes in penalties were handed out as sentences in this frame alone.

Hozack's shorthanded goal at 13:13 widened the Harvard lead to 4-1, but Sean O'Byrne tallied one for the Tigers half a minute later with help from a strange carom off the boards in the Harvard zone. Jack Hughes ended last night's scoring with a goal at 15:40.
