J.V. Icers Nip Codders 4-3 As Marchand Nets Two GoaIs

By Carl A. Esterhay

For those half-crazed, sick addicts of Harvard hockey who couldn't find tickets to the Beanpot or those who could but flunked the first term of their Monday night tutorial, the J.V. icers provided the thrills and escaped with a 4-3 decision over Cape Cod Community College at Watson Rink yesterday afternoon.

Forward John Marchand notched the game-winner for the Crimson at 16:28 of the final period. Andy Spalding dug the puck out of the boards in the Cod zone and flipped a centering pass to Marchand, who flicked a shot into the upper right corner of the net for his second goal of the afternoon.

Rough forechecking filled the first period as the Crimson prevented the Codders from extending their territorial limit beyond the blue line. The puck stayed in the Helmsmen zone but out of their net as the Harvard forwards bunched in front of the goal and missed several close shots.

Spalding finally cracked the Cod crease with a low, backhand shot after receiving the puck from John Moot at 17:18.

The opening minutes of the second stanza replayed the first period. Harvard skated well, pressured the Cod zone, slammed shots and dominated the ice--but did not score.

Harvard's defense relaxed and Cape Cod took advantage of the lapse to tally twice. John Connors swiped an errant Crimson pass and lifted the puck over Harvard goalie John Conant's shoulder to tie the game.

Seconds later, a Cod forward broke into the Harvard zone after a face-off and steered a short, wrist shot in the corner past the stunned Conant.

With the game deadlocked at 3-3, Cape Cod unveiled a defensive alignment for the third period--four skaters and a man constantly in the penalty box. The impatient Crimson could not capitalize, settling for ineffective bombs from the blue line instead of rockets from the slot.

Marchand, Moot, and Spalding, who were responsible for all the Crimson goals, finally combined to cut the Cod's net.
