UFW's Fred Ross Speaks to Recruit Union Organizers

By Joan Feigenbaum

Fred Ross of the United Farm Workers (UFW) spoke to approximately 40 students in Emerson Hall last night in an effort to recruit students for the UFW winter program.

The winter program will be held in the UFW headquarters in Keene, Calif, from January 16 to March 27, Ross said. Participants will be given training and experience in all aspects of organizing farm workers, he added.

UFW History

Ross related the history of the UFW and told many anecdotes about UFW President Cesar Chavez.

Ross first met Chavez in San Jose in 1952, he said. The two worked together in the Community Service Organization until Chavez left in 1962 to devote all his time to organizing Chicano farm workers.

Three Harvard students participated past summer in a UFW training program.

The Harvard Friends of the UFW joined other Cambridge pro-UFW groups early this morning in a march at Chelsea Market to raise money for the California farm workers.
