Stickwomen Pick Howard And Seidler

By Susan H. Goldstein

At their team banquet Sunday night, the field hockey team named juniors Ellen Seidler and Mary Howard as next year's captains.

Howard started the season as an offensive player, switching to defense during the second half of the season. Seidler played goalie, helping her team to its 7-4-4 record this fall.

Although the team was eliminated in the first round of the Northeast Intercollegiate Field Hockey Championships, it gained valuable experience from participating, Howard said yesterday.

In that first round game, the Crimson women lost by a score of 2-0 to a Yale team they had defeated during the regular season by the same score.

The team will need a determined effort to achieve national caliber next year, Seidler said yesterday. "But that's not out of reach," she added. Howard said the team is "ready to peak, and to be a lot more disciplined."

The only player the team will lose is this year's captain, senior Lucy Wood. "Overall, it was a really good season," Wood said yesterday, "We had to realize that this year every team improved, she added.

For Seidler and Howard, the work begins now, as they start fundraising for their team's fall trip to either England or Scotland, Seidler said yesterday.
